In their endeavour to contribute to society’s modern-day issues and themes, the artists also collaborated with Padma Shri Dr Niru Kumar to create a special presentation called ‘He-for-She’ highlighting gender equality as depicted by the age-old philosophy of ‘Adhanaarishwara’.
They also conceptualised and independently staged a special dance drama production, “Sitayana” bringing together the classical dance form and English monologues presented with versatile ‘abhinaya’ in Bharatanatyam style. An interpretation of Sita’s poignant journey and its relevance in the struggles of modern-day women, this production was staged at the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India Habitat Centre and various other platforms.
With great Bhakti-bhaav, the artists have performed at temples across India including the Natyanjali Festival across temples in South India, Aiyappan Temple festivals, and also the Nadaneerajanam at Tirupati Tirumala Temple. The artists have also performed at the Dev Deepawali Festival and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. Bhadra and Gayathri started training in Bharatanatyam from an early age. Gayathri learnt under Guru V Krishnamoorthi and Bhadra has trained under Guru Yamini Krishnamoorthy and the duo met when they resumed their dance tutelage under Guru Krishnamoorthi after a break of over a decade. They now continue to pursue advanced training in the art form under Guru Dr. Ratheesh Babu, while also creating their own productions.
They have several solo and duo performances to their credit. Apart from following their passion for dance, Bhadra is a respected journalist by profession, while Gayathri is a corporate leader in Communications and CSR.
The artists are also associated with the Centre for Empowerment and Development Studies (www.cedsindia.org), a non-partisan, independent organisation working towards research, awareness and capacity building for critical social issues among communities.
